Working of centrifugal pump.

Before knowing Centrifugal pumps you should know what are pumps:--Technical Videos--
Pump are such type of hydraulic machines which converts mechanical energy to hydraulic energy (the hydraulic energy is in the form of pressure).

Why it is called centrifugal pump?
The hydraulic energy (pressure energy) is produced by converting mechanical energy from the centrifugal force of fluid, so it is called Centrifugal pump.
What is the function of a pump?
The function of a pump is to generate flow.
Fig: 1

Main parts of a centrifugal pump (shown in fig: 1)
  • Impeller.
  • Casing.
  • Suction pipe wit foot valve and strainer.
  • Delivery pipe.
Impeller: it is the heart if the centrifugal pump,  the rotation part at the centre. It consists of guide blades. The impeller is rotated by means of a shaft connected to a electrical motor.Don't Click Here:
Casing:  it is an air tight passage designed around the impeller which is designed so that, the kinetic energy of the water discharged out side is converted to pressure energy before the water leaves the casing and enters the delivery pipe.
Suction pipe wit foot valve and strainer: this is the part which sucks the fluid from the sump and give to the inlet of the impeller. The sump portion as shown in fig:1 it has foot valve and strainer, foot valve is a one way valve its opens in upper direction only and strains is used to strain the fluid collected (reject the impurities).
Delivery pipe: this pipe one end is connected to the out put of the pump and other to the delivery.
How does a centrifugal pump works?Don't Click Here:
As shown in the fig: 1, the impeller of the centrifugal pump is connected to a shaft which is intern connected to a eclectic motor, as the motor is switch or it rotates and the rotation of the motor is transmitter through the shaft connect with the motor and the impeller. This the torque reached the impeller which makes the impeller to rotate.
The guide blades of the impeller are so designed that as it is rotated a low pressure is created and oil (fluid) gets sucked through the suction pipe from the sump.
As shown in fig: 1 the sucked oil is thrown in the direction if the arrows to the casing and it reached the delivery pipe. You can notice in the figure that the point at the casing the oil from the impeller is hitting is having comparable lesser area of flow and gradually it moves the are of flow increases resulting in the reduction of velocity. When the velocity is reduced pressure increases. This is kinetic energy is converted to pressure energy when the  flow leaves the pump. This is how a centrifugal pump works. --Technical Videos--

  1. just wanted to let you know the presentation is extremely basic in nature. Does not address the real working principle of cent. pump. i would advise the lecturer to do some more research and re-do this video.
    thanks.

  2. Very good lecture covering the basic principles. The lecturer needs to slow down his speech though.
