Working of Toroidal CVT.

The CVT is a continuously variabletransmission system. This type of transmission systems are used in vehicle withautomatic transmission. The function of the transmission system is to change the gear ratio between the engine and rear wheels. A manual transmission will be having many numbers of gears where the CVT will not have gears.
Different type of CVT’s:
1. Pulley based CVT
2. Toroidal CVT
3. Hydrostatic CVT
This topic we will be studying about Toroidal CVT. See the video in this topic for easy understanding.
Toroidal CVT (stage 1)
Toroidal CVT (stage 2)
Toroidal CVT (stage 3)

Main components of a Toroidal CVT:
1.      1. Driving disc
2.      2. Driven disc
3.      3. Rollers
Driving disc: as shown in the figure the driving disc gets its drive from the engine.
Driven disc: it is getting its drive the driven disc through the rollers.
Rollers: the roller is transferring the driving from the driving disc to the driven disc.
Working of a Toroidal CVT:
The driving disc gets its drive from the engine and is transferred to the driven disc through the rollers in both the sides as shown in the figure. The movement of the rollers through the profile of the disc is actually varying the gear rations.
When the roller is linked to the centre of the driving disc and to the rim of the driven disc. The system will be in low gear that means high torque and low speed (similar to 1st gear in manual transmission)
When the roller is linked to the centre of the driven disc and to the rim of the driving disc. The system will be in high gear that means high torque and low speed (similar to 5st gear of a 5 gear manual transmission vehicle).
