Air filter is one critical part of an engine. This is the unit which cleans the air which is sucked from the atmosphere to be supplied to the Engine inlet manifold. If this air is not effectively cleaned (has dust). It will result in reduced efficiency and gradual failure of the engine. Engineering tutorials
Air filter consists of:
1. Air filter outer element casing.
2. Air filter inner element casing.
3. Air filter outer element.
4. Air filter inner element.Automobile Engineering tutorials
Air filter outer element and inner element are the most critical part in this unit.
Air filter outer element: Is made of paper, in a folded manner as seen in the video. In each automobile it will have a particular micron rating. The atmospheric air passing through the pre-cleaner unit comes in contact with the air filter outer, which cleans it. If the air filter outer element is not replaced as recommended by the manufacturer, it can result in the failure of the engine because this element is made of paper, and it can crack by letting in all the dust particles accumulated over it to air filter inner and there by chocking it, it might also enter engine manifold if inner also cracks.
Air filter inner element: This is the final air cleaning unit before air enters the inlet. It's made of thin white cloth like material with a recommended micron rating.
In backhoe loader construction equipment it is recommended to replace both the inner and outer element at the third cleaning of the outer element. In dusty conditions, it recommends to replace both frequently.
