The scavenging is a process involved in the working of a two stroke engine.
The process of pushing the exhaust gas in two stroke engine with the fresh charge coming from the transfer port is called scavenging. This video clearly explained the process.
As shown in the fig: 1 when the piston is at BDC (bottom dead centre) the pre-compressed fresh charge moves up through the transfer port and reached the cylinder which will be filled with exhaust gas from the previous power stroke. So the fresh charge pushes out the exhaust gas through the outlet, this process is called scavenging.--Technical Videos--
You can notice a projection on the top of the piston (marked red in fig:1) this is to assist the scavenging process, as the fresh charge is pushing the hot air to exhaust, this will result some of the fresh charge to burn (loss of efficiency of the engine). To reduce the contact between the fresh charge and burned (exhaust gas) there by reducing the loss, this modification is done.Don't Click Here:
